    Decoding working memory-related information from repeated psychophysiological EEG experiments using convolutional and contrastive neural networks

    Objective. Extracting reliable information from electroencephalogram (EEG) is difficult because the low signal-to-noise ratio and significant intersubject variability seriously hinder statistical analyses. However, recent advances in explainable machine learning open a new strategy to address this problem. Approach. The current study evaluates this approach using results from the classification and decoding of electrical brain activity associated with information retention. We designed four neural network models differing in architecture, training strategies, and input representation to classify single experimental trials of a working memory task. Main results. Our best models achieved an accuracy (ACC) of 65.29 ± 0.76 and Matthews correlation coefficient of 0.288 ± 0.018, outperforming the reference model trained on the same data. The highest correlation between classification score and behavioral performance was 0.36 (p = 0.0007). Using analysis of input perturbation, we estimated the importance of EEG channels and frequency bands in the task at hand. The set of essential features identified for each network varies. We identified a subset of features common to all models that identified brain regions and frequency bands consistent with current neurophysiological knowledge of the processes critical to attention and working memory. Finally, we proposed sanity checks to examine further the robustness of each model's set of features. Significance. Our results indicate that explainable deep learning is a powerful tool for decoding information from EEG signals. It is crucial to train and analyze a range of models to identify stable and reliable features. Our results highlight the need for explainable modeling as the model with the highest ACC appeared to use residual artifactual activity

    Analysis of the 30-m running speed test results in soccer players in third soccer leagues

    The basic goal of this study was to analysis of the results of the 30-m running speed test in soccer players in third soccer leagues. The study examined the group of randomly selected seventy athletes from two soccer teams from the Ekstraklasa league, two teams from the first league and two teams from the second leagues were randomized into the study group. All the measurements were performed in indoor arenas. The temperature in the arenas ranged from 22 to 24 C. Measurements were recorded in the morning (between 10:00 am and 12:00 am). The Running Speed Test was used in the study to diagnose speed potential in the athletes. The running speed was measured by means of a set of photocells located at 0m, 5m, 20m, 30m. The results obtained demonstrated that the elite-level matches are more dynamic since the players show higher values of speed parameters. Apart from starting speed, the results obtained for the distance of 5 m provide information for coaches concerning their work on special strength. The speed is indicated by the results obtained for 20 and 30 m distances, whereas flying measurements between 5/20m and 20/30m reflect inherited speed aptitudes

    Can medical staff have visible tattoos? A survey study among students

    Background: Tattoo is becoming a more and more common form of body decoration of people from representatives of various professions.The aim of this study was: what is the opinion of university students about medical staff having visible tattoos. Material and methods: The study was conducted among the students of four universities in Gdańsk. The questionnaire contained questions about the acceptance of visible tattoos in people working in medical professions. The respondents were also asked about their attitudes to tattoos as a form of body decoration and whether they had tattoos themselves. The statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics 25 software. Results: Filled-in questionnaires were obtained from 676 respondents, including 477 students of the medical university and 199 students of non-medical universities. The students who have tattoos themselves accept visible tattoos in healthcare professionals to a significantly greater extent (92%) than those who do not have tattoos, but the acceptance of visible tattoos in healthcare professionals in this group turned out to be very high too (75%). The respondents most readily accepted a visible tattoo on the skin of a laboratory diagnostician (75%). Conclusions: University students, regardless of their university profile, consider a visible tattoo as a completely acceptable phenomenon in healthcare professionals

    The Frame of the Game: Blurring the Boundary between Fiction and Reality in Mobile Experiences

    Mobile experiences that take place in public settings such as on city streets create new opportunities for interweaving the fictional world of a performance or game with the everyday physical world. A study of a touring performance reveals how designers generated excitement and dramatic tension by implicating bystanders and encouraging the (apparent) crossing of normal boundaries of behaviour. The study also shows how designers dealt with associated risks through a process of careful orchestration. Consequently, we extend an existing framework for designing spectator interfaces with the concept of performance frames, enabling us to distinguish audience from bystanders. We conclude that using ambiguity to blur the frame can be a powerful design tactic, empowering players to willingly suspend disbelief, so long as a safety-net of orchestration ensures that they do not stray into genuine difficulty

    Outcome of SARS-CoV-2-Infected Polish Patients with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia

    Background. The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) has become the cause of a worldwide pandemic, and its clinical infection course in patients with hematological malignancies may be severe. Methods. We performed a retrospective study on 188 chronic lymphocytic leukemia patients (CLL) with COVID-19 infection. Results. At the time of infection 51 patients (27.1%) were treated with Bruton tyrosine kinase inhibitor (BTKi), 46 (24.5%) with anti-CD20 antibodies while 37 patients (19.7%) received venetoclax. In total, 111 patients (59.0%) required hospitalization and 50 patients (26.5%) died due to COVID-19. Patients with poor performance status (ECOG >1; p = 0.02), advanced age (>65 years; p = 0.04), low hemoglobin concentration (≤10 g/dl; p = 0.0001), low platelets (p = 0.003), and elevated lactate dehydrogenase level (LDH; p = 0.014) had an increased risk of death due to COVID-19. Neither CLL treatment status (treatment naïve vs. treated) nor the type of CLL-directed treatment had impact on the SARS-CoV-2 related risk of death. The multivariate survival analysis showed that advanced age (p = 0.009) and low platelet count (p = 0.0001) were associated with significantly shorter patients’ overall survival. Conclusions. SARS-CoV-2 infection in CLL patients is associated with poor outcome regardless of administered CLL-directed treatment
